It's been quite the two days for me.

Today was the last day for changes to be submitted for this stage of the release cycle of our product at work. The EL (Engineering Lead) had said several days ago that he would only be accepting showstoppers and I had actually finished up my last showstopper on Tuesday, so I was sitting pretty. However, I did have two outstanding bugs which were borderline cases: they weren't worth holding up the release for, but they would be a pain in the butt for our users. Since they didn't look that tough to fix and I had no other urgent work, I asked the EL if he wanted me to get them ready for submission and he said yes.

You can probably guess what comes next: those two bugs turned out to be more difficult to fix than I'd anticipated. They weren't really hard, per se, just time consuming, as there were a lot of simple changes which needed to be made to a lot of files. The net result was that I ended up working on them for most of yesterday, straight through the night, and for much of today as well. I've only had an hour of sleep since Tuesday night.

But that isn't the half of it.

Last night I ducked out for a few minutes to buy cat food. On my way back a cop pulled me over. It turned out that my insurance had expired two weeks ago! Normally that's a $600 fine, but since I had a clear driving record the officer let me go with a warning. When I got home I found the renewal notice buried near the bottom of a stack of unopened mail. D'oh!

Today, while I was waiting for my code to be reviewed, I called a cab and headed down to the insurance broker to get new stickers for my plates. But when the broker tried to put the renewal through on her computer it was rejected. It turned out that my driver's license had expired as well, over 11 months ago!

So for the past year I've been driving around without a license, the last two weeks of that without any insurance either. Double d'oh!

And in the middle of all of this, my password at work expired as well. We have to change our passwords every few months and for me today was the day. I'd been planning on using my phone to monitor the progress of the code review while I was off getting my insurance and license renewed, but as a result of the password change I wasn't able to access my accounts until I was almost home again.

But now that's all behind me. I've got my new insurance, license and password. After some last minute glitches my final two changes have made it into the release without breaking anything. And since trouble always comes in threes, I figure I'm now in clear and can finally get some sleep.
